3rd Annual Latke Festival & Cook-Off

Just in time for Hanukah, on December 19, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Edible Brooklyn and Great Performances are teaming up for the Third Annual Latke Festival, where Manhattan and Brooklyn chefs (check the list below) will compete for the honor of best potato pancake--and you get to sample their entries. It will be one unforgettable night of grease-splattered goodness, and we hope you will come laud the latke with us. Tickets are $30 and that includes all the latkes you can eat, as well as plenty of sides, plus New York wine, beer and more to wash it all down.
And in addition to entries from restaurants around the city, one of the competitors could be you: We’re on the lookout for favorite latke recipes from our readers, and we're going to pick a winner from all the recipe entries we receive until December 1. These latkes can be your own invention, multi-culti, made with rutabagas in addition to Russets, or simply the family recipe that’s you’ve always made. All you have to do is send yours, with a little bit about how it came to be, to info@ediblebrooklyn.com.
The winner will have not just the honor of showing off his or her crispy creation at the event alongside some of the city’s best chefs, but will also score the brand-new Breville 5-quart die-cast stand mixer shown here. That’s a Mercedes of a machine that might not help you with your latkes, but will make short work of those Hanukkah sponge cakes and coconut macaroons.
Either way, we hope to see you there!

Participating chefs include:
Ron Ben-Israel, Ron Ben-Israel Cakes
Noah Bernamoff, Mile End
Saul Bolton, The Vanderbilt
Beth Brown, Mae Mae Cafe
Thad Davis, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola
Robb Garceau, Great Performances
Jack Kiggins, The Plaza
Julian Medina, Toloache
Alex Raij and Eder Montero, El Quinto Pino, Txikito, and La Vara (soon to open in Brooklyn)
Adam Ross, Gold Coast Delicatessen
Victoria Saladana, El Café at El Museo del Barrio
Mark Spangenthal, Kutsher's
Michael Sullivan, Veselka Bowery
Tim Sullivan, BAMcafe
Bill Telepan, Telepan

And to help us determine the Festival's latke-making favorites, we've recruited some heavy hitting judges, including:
Michael Arad, architect and Designer of the National 9/11 Memorial
Melissa Clark, author and New York Times contributor
Mitchell Davis, Vice President of the James Beard Foundation
Cathy Erway, author, The Art of Eating In
Karen Hopkins, President of BAM
Nazli Parvizi, Mayorial Commissioner of the Community Affairs Unit of NYC
Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President
Mimi Sheraton, former New York Times restaurant critic
Rachel Wharton, Edible Brooklyn

Black Friday Ads

2011 Black Friday Ads
In This Issue...

  • Office Depot Friday Ad

  • Shopko Black Friday Ad

  • Amazon Kindle Fire Released

  • Final Pages of Sears Ad

  •
    Hello

    How are you doing?  We were fortunate to receive a lot of ads last week, especially the big names like Best Buy, Target, Kohl's Toys R Us, and Walmart.

    But the ads haven't stopped there.  They keep pouring in.  Today we added Office Depot and Shopko, and in case you missed it we received the final pages of the Sears Black Friday Ad yesterday.

    We now have 56 Black Friday Ads for you.  We spoke to a couple retailers today and will have some more popular ones later this week.

    Here is a summary of what we posted today:

    Office Depot
    Stores open at 6am on Black Friday this year.  Office Depot is letting you shop and get their Black Friday deals online starting Thanksgiving Day at 7am.  According to the ad, there will be some Black Friday products not available online, however.

    * Buy any HP Laptop and get 32GB Touchpad Tablet -- $149.99 (save $300)
    * Toshiba 15.6" Laptop w/ 2nd Gen Intel Core i3 processor, 6GM of RAM, 500GB hard drive, and over 5hrs battery life -- $399.99 (save $230) - this is a nice configuration
    * Seagate 2TB SATA Internal Hard Drive -- $69.99 (save $90)
    * HP Photosmart Wireless All-in-One Printer -- $89.99 (save $110)
    * TomTom 5" XXL550 GPS -- $89.99 (save $60)

    Shopko Black Friday Ad
    Shop over 480 doobuster deals at Shopko this Black Friday.  Save $230 on a Coby 32" LCD TV.  The price is $199.99, and that seems to be about the average price for a bottom dollar 32" TV deal during Black Friday 2011, with a few exceptions.

    Other specials include 75% off all fine jewelry, Toshiba 55" LED TV for $999.99 (save $600), Sony W530 Digital Camera for $79.99 (save $70), and an iHome Portable Stero System or Dual Alarm Clock for iPhone/iPod for $59.99 (save $40).

    Amazon Kindle Fire
    The much anticipated Kindle Fire from Amazon was released today.  You can order today and it ships in 3-5 days according to their website.  The Kindle Fire is much cheaper than most tablets in the market at just $200.

    Some people like the Kindle Fire because its much cheaper than the iPad and can display Flash-based websites and video. You can watch movies and TV shows, listen to music, and read magazines and books. It features thousands of apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Pandora.

    It has a web browser, free cloud storage for all your Amazon content, 7" color touchscreen, and dual-core processor.

    Final Pages of Sears Ad
    We've received the Sears Black Friday Ad this year in a unique fashion; 3 different parts. Yesterday we received the final piece to the puzzle, and in our opinion the most important: the doorbusters for electronics and appliances.

    The Sears doorbusters start at 4am on Black Friday and end at 1pm. Here are some highlights:

    * Zenith 40" 1080p 600Hz Plasma TV for $499.99 (save $400)
    * 32" 720p LCD TV for $199.99 (save $80)
    * Free tool bag with $20 tool purchase ($9.99 value)
    * Kenmore over-the-range microwave for $139.99 (save 50%)
    * Craftsman 179cc dual stage 22" snow thrower w/ remote crank cute control for $499.99 (save $230)
    * Samsung Blu-ray Player w/ Wi-Fi for $99.99 (save $80)

    Also included in the extra pages of the ad are Black Friday deals on jewelry, clothing, and games.

    Wireless Deals
    Lastly we added 8 new cell phone deals on the website today.  We'll be adding more this week.  View the Cell Phone Deals

    The Prize Giveaways Continue...
    In a few days here we'll be giving away (2) copies of Harry Potter, the Complete 8-Film Collection on Blu-ray or DVD.  Help us get to 25,000 Facebook fans and we can give it away sooner!  The next prizes up will be a Kindle Touch, Garmin Nuvi 1450 LMT GPS, and Nikon Coolpix S8200.
