3rd Annual Latke Festival & Cook-Off
Just in time for Hanukah, on December 19, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Edible Brooklyn and Great Performances are teaming up for the Third Annual Latke Festival, where Manhattan and Brooklyn chefs (check the list below) will compete for the honor of best potato pancake--and you get to sample their entries. It will be one unforgettable night of grease-splattered goodness, and we hope you will come laud the latke with us. Tickets are $30 and that includes all the latkes you can eat, as well as plenty of sides, plus New York wine, beer and more to wash it all down.
And in addition to entries from restaurants around the city, one of the competitors could be you: We’re on the lookout for favorite latke recipes from our readers, and we're going to pick a winner from all the recipe entries we receive until December 1. These latkes can be your own invention, multi-culti, made with rutabagas in addition to Russets, or simply the family recipe that’s you’ve always made. All you have to do is send yours, with a little bit about how it came to be, to info@ediblebrooklyn.com.
The winner will have not just the honor of showing off his or her crispy creation at the event alongside some of the city’s best chefs, but will also score the brand-new Breville 5-quart die-cast stand mixer shown here. That’s a Mercedes of a machine that might not help you with your latkes, but will make short work of those Hanukkah sponge cakes and coconut macaroons.
Either way, we hope to see you there!Participating chefs include:
Ron Ben-Israel, Ron Ben-Israel Cakes
Noah Bernamoff, Mile End
Saul Bolton, The Vanderbilt
Beth Brown, Mae Mae Cafe
Thad Davis, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola
Robb Garceau, Great Performances
Jack Kiggins, The Plaza
Julian Medina, Toloache
Alex Raij and Eder Montero, El Quinto Pino, Txikito, and La Vara (soon to open in Brooklyn)
Adam Ross, Gold Coast Delicatessen
Victoria Saladana, El Café at El Museo del Barrio
Mark Spangenthal, Kutsher's
Michael Sullivan, Veselka Bowery
Tim Sullivan, BAMcafe
Bill Telepan, Telepan
And to help us determine the Festival's latke-making favorites, we've recruited some heavy hitting judges, including:
Melissa Clark, author and New York Times contributor
Mitchell Davis, Vice President of the James Beard Foundation
Cathy Erway, author, The Art of Eating In
Karen Hopkins, President of BAM
Nazli Parvizi, Mayorial Commissioner of the Community Affairs Unit of NYC
Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President
Mimi Sheraton, former New York Times restaurant critic
Rachel Wharton, Edible Brooklyn
